Grade 9
|
To further expand our outdoor education programme, we will be introducing the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award Scheme, the world’s leading youth achievement award to grade 9 students.
A significant component of this award is the planning and completion of an adventurous journey. There are three levels of award, Bronze, Silver and Gold with the challenge of each journey growing with each level.
By the time students are completing the Gold award, they are planning and carrying out an independent
and challenging self-guided expedition.
To begin to develop interest in the Award along with some of the required skills, we will be running practice
camps on
Group 1 - Friday, September 21st and Saturday, September 22nd, .
Group 2 - Saturday, September 22nd and Sunday 23rd
Students will be placed into groups depending on weekend commitments.
Although not compulsory, we would like to encourage all G9 students to take part in the camp on one of these evenings. The students will camp on the field, plan and cook their own meal using portable camping equipment then hike with day packs up
to Mount Rokko in the morning.

Once students have taken part in the practice camp, the G9 Week without Walls trip in October can then be recognised as a qualifying journey for the Bronze award. This means that all G9 students taking part would be able to achieve the Bronze Award if they also pursue a service activity and develop a personal skill.
We hope that all Grade 9 students will want to take part in the camp and that many will go on to pursue the
Bronze award in Grade 9 along with the Silver and Gold awards as they move through High school.
