(updated 2:30pm Monday 1st October)
As a result of this week's typhoon, Canadian Academy activities department and leadership team have been reassessing the viability of each of this week's secondary school Week without Walls trips. Our primary concern is the safety of each of your children. Therefore we are ensuring the safety of each venue and all of the planned activities, including water activities and hiking. All hiking trails will be checked before students begin their walks.
Please find trip specific updates below. If the status or activities for any of the trips changes, we will update this website and notify the relevant parents via email.
Grade 6
Local information from Awaji indicates that the areas our students will be and the activities they will participate in were not affected by the typhoon. The trails will be checked before our students begin their hikes.
Grade 7
Officials from the camp in Wakasan report that there has been no damage to their facilities, as well as no landslide danger. Sea conditions are calm, the camp and roads are open and our students should be able to enjoy all activities as planned.
Grade 8
Montbell, an outdoor company overseeing this trip, indicates that the water level in the river is high. In order for our students to raft and kayak, the water level needs to drop. Montbell will monitor the water level to determine if we are able to kayak and/or raft later in the week. Montbell tells us that this trip is safe, however, alternative hikes and activities may be substituted depending on conditions. The trails will be checked before our students begin their hikes.
Grade 9
The water level of the river on the grade 9 trip has dropped considerably. Evergreen, the company organizing the trip, rafted this morning (Tuesday). They reported a safe level to raft as the conditions were similar to previous trips. The grade 9 students will be rafting tomorrow (Wednesday).
Evergreen, the outdoor company organizing this trip, are walking the trails as well as re-examining the campground areas. Their initial reports state that all trails are open and that the campground is suitable for camping. As there is currently a caution for landslides in this area on the Japan Meteorological Agency website, local experts and officials will confirm the safety of hiking trails before CA students embark on any trails. The school bus will be with the group throughout the trip. If Evergreen determines that the campground is unsuitable due to wet conditions, or an activity cannot run, the group can be moved to the beachside camp location, and alternative activities can be arranged. At this time, the water level in the river is high as water is being released from a nearby dam. At this point, the rafting will not take place.
Grade 10
All roads are open. The Shimanami Cycle Terminal states that conditions are safe. This trip will continue as originally planned. The Imabari-shi area, where students will travel on Wednesday, currently has a landslide caution on the Japan Meteorological Agency website. We will continue to monitor this situation over the next two days, and if local experts deem this area to be unsafe, we will use alternative routes.
Grade 11
Officials from the camp YMCA Anan report that there has been no damage to their facilities, as well as no landslide danger. Sea conditions are calm, the camp and roads are open. Our students should be able to enjoy all activities as planned.
Grade 12
Evergreen, the outdoor company organizing this trip, are walking the trails to ensure their safety. Their initial reports state that all trails are open, and Japan Meteorological Agency report no landslide caution for this area. The trip will continue as originally planned.
